Does Aloe vera have benefits on patients suffered from
irritable bowel syndrome?
Aloe vera has been suggested to be beneficial in treating irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS) symptoms. However, researchers from UK could not
find any evidence that Aloe vera benefits patients with IBS in a recent
study. [1]

How does Aloe vera help gastric ulcer?
A study has shown that Aloe vera may have gastric acid anti-secretory
activity and may protect the gastric mucosa at low concentrations
against injurious agents. [16] While another study of rats shows that
Aloe vera treatment can reduce leukocyte adherence and TNF-alpha
level, elevate IL-10 level and promote gastric ulcer healing. [3]

ANTI-OXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF ALOE VERA
Aloe vera itself contains antioxidants such as APS-1 and
dihydrocoumarin derivatives and it also assists the aborption of some
anti-oxidants such as vitamins A and C. The vitamins last longer in the
plasma with the Aloes. [6-8]

Aloe vera relieves oxdative stress in diabetic rats. Oral administration of
ethanolic Aloe vera leaf gel extract for 21 days resulted in a significant
reduction in fasting blood glucose, thiobarbituric acid reactive
substances, hydroperoxides and alpha-tocopherol and significant
improvement in ascorbic acid, reduced glutathione and insulin in the
plasma of diabetic rats. In addition, this administration also resulted in a
significant reduction in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances,
hydroperoxides, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione
peroxidase and significant improvement in reduced glutathione in the
pancreas of STZ-induced diabetic rats when compared with untreated
diabetic rats. [12]

Because of its anti-oxidant activities, Aloe vera may have benefits
for diabetes.[14, 17-19]
Animal studies have shown that aloe vera leaf gel extract is effective on
restoration of altered fatty acid compositions in the liver and kidney of
diabetic rats. In a study, researchers suppled Aloe vera gel extract at a
dose of 300 mg/kg bodyweight per day to STZ-induced diabetic rats for
a period of 21 days. They observed a significant reduction in fasting
blood glucose, hepatic transaminases, plasma and tissue (liver and
kidney) cholesterol, triglycerides, free fatty acids and phospholipids and
a significant improvement in plasma insulin. [4] An extract of Aloe vera
leaf gel extract has been shown to be even more effective than
glibenclamide in restoring some liver function parameters in a study of
diabetic rats. [10]

Indian researchers suggest that mineral contents, e.g. Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn,
may also contribute to the health benefits of Aloe vera leaf gel on
diabetes. [5, 11] As some of these inorganic elements improve impaired
glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus management. [5]

Aloe vera may benefit some skin conditions.
Some researchers applied Aloe vera on skin diseases, e.g. psoriasis and
showed positive results [15], while some do not. [9]

I am a big fan of Aloe Vera products having used them successfully for many years for various things. The Internet being such a vast storehouse of knowledge has allowed me to investigate this miraculous plant and I have found a wealth of information. Following is some research I did about the Aloe Vera benefits for heart diseases.

In 1984, Dr. Om Prakash Agarwal speaking at the International College of Heart Diseases in San Antonio, Texas, during the annual conference surprised his colleagues with the apparently amazing successful results he obtained administering Aloe Vera to his patients. This was reported in Angiology, The Journal of Vascular Diseases in 1985. In the study the following was noted:

5000 patients with angina were studied for 5 years
All were given a combination of Aloe Vera with high fibre from plant origin.
A significant reduction was noted in blood cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar and lipid fats
There was an increase in HDL levels (good cholesterol) and significant lowering of LDL (bad cholesterol)
There was a reduction in frequency of angina attacks during the study period and patients had their drug dosages gradually reduced over time
Patients who were also diabetic received the most benefit from the trial with 95 % of diabetics cured
85% of the patients overall were practically cured at the end of the study with their ECGs returning to normal.
None of the patients reported untoward side effects and all 5000 patients were still surviving at the conclusion of the study.

Looking at these results it points to the fact that Aloe Vera definitely has significant health benefits for the treatment of Heart Disease and Diabetes. Upon looking further into the details of the study the following extra startling facts were uncovered. Of the 5000 patients studied

3167 were diabetic and 94% had blood sugar levels returning to normal after 3 months
2990 diabetic patients were taking hyperglycaemic medications and had to have their medication withdrawn at the end of 2 months of using Aloe Vera supplementation
2572 were smokers
2151 had hypertension and all those taking beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and diurectics for hypertension and angina had to have their medication reduced to half their dosages prescribed prior to the study.

Doctor Agarwal’s conclusion was that Aloe Vera has a definite role in the prevention and management of atherosclerotic heart disease and in controlling the blood sugar level in diabetic patients. People suffering with various forms of heart disease can take “heart” from this Aloe Vera study. Unfortunately not much significant research is done when it comes to natural products. Most evaluations are done by Pharmaceutical companies whose agenda is to provide drugs and not natural medicine. Therefore many of these studies admit minor benefits but also conclude that more research is needed therefore leaving the questions f the benefits wide open.

As for me, I have no doubts about the healing powers of Aloe Vera, having used it successfully myself, mostly for digestive tract complaints and topical skin conditions arising from burns, cuts and insect bites. The committee, assembled by the American College of Endocrinology and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, has been meeting in Washington, D.C., for the last two days talking about prediabetes.

Here are their recommendations for dealing with prediabetes:

Don’t blow it off. In prediabetes, blood sugar levels are above normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes — yet. But prediabetes isn’t harmless; it makes diabetes (and its many complications) more likely. And it’s a risk for your heart right now.

The bottom line: Prediabetes is an immediate risk and a shadow hanging over your future health. So get aggressive about dealing with it now. Don’t wait until it gets worse.

Focus on lifestyle. “Lifestyle is the first way to go” in dealing with prediabetes, committee member Yehuda Handelsman, MD, FACP, FACE, medical director of the Metabolic Institute of America, said today at a news conference about the committee’s prediabetes recommendations.

Here are the steps the committee wants you to take:

Lose 5% to 10% of your body weight — for good.
Get 30-60 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity at least five days per week.
Eat low-fat diet with adequate dietary fiber.
To lower blood pressure, cut back on sodium and don’t drink too much alcohol.
Take aspirin, unless you have a medical reason not to (ask your doctor first).
Get your blood pressure and cholesterol down to the levels recommended for diabetes patients.

Take medication, if needed. If lifestyle isn’t enough to reduce your risk of diabetes and heart disease, medications may help. But you’ll still need to persist with the healthy lifestyle.

Don’t get hung up on numbers. The blood sugar benchmarks for diagnosing diabetes are “somewhat arbitrary,” says Alan Garber, MD, PhD, FACE, the committee’s chairman and a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. If your blood sugar numbers are outside of the normal range, that’s enough of a cue to take action.

The committee also called for further research to find out which prediabetes patients are at the highest risk, and to study drug treatment for prediabetes. The committee’s work was sponsored by various drug companies.

None of the patients reported untoward side effects and all 5000 patients were still surviving at the conclusion of the study.

3167 were diabetic and 94% had blood sugar levels returning to normal after 3 months
2990 diabetic patients were taking hyperglycaemic medications and had to have their medication withdrawn at the end of 2 months of using Aloe Vera supplementation
2572 were smokers
2151 had hypertension and all those taking beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and diurectics for hypertension and angina had to have their medication reduced to half their dosages prescribed prior to the study.

What is Aloe?
Aloe is a plant. The Aloe plant prefers dry climates and grows in the more arid regions of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Scientists have discovered more than 240 different species of the Aloe plant. Of those, just 4 are acknowledged as offering significant health benefits to humans. One species, Aloe Barbadensis Miller, holds the most promise of all. This last one is the Aloe species most commonly used in Aloe-based products.

Aloe Vera is a member of the Lily family, but looks somewhat like a cactus. This is because of the spins that protrude perpendicular to its direction of growth. You can see this resemblance in the picture on the left.

Note the sharp cactus-like spines pointing at right angles to the plant’s direction of growth.

Aloe saponaria (Aiton) Haworth, distinguished by its yellow sap and glaucous red flowers with yellow throats, is cultivated in the southwestern United States and has been observed to escape. Apparently it persists only when supplementary water is available.
