About
Aloe vera, also known as the Medicinal Aloe, is a species of succulent plant that probably originated in northern Africa. The species does not have any naturally occurring populations, although closely related Aloes do occur in northern Africa. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine since the beginning of the first century AD, because it is mentioned in the New Testament (John 19:39-40 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes).
However, it is unclear whether the aloes described in the bible are derived from A. vera. Extracts from A. vera are widely used in the cosmetics and alternative medicine industries, being marketed as variously having rejuvenating, healing or soothing properties. There is, however, little scientific evidence of the effectiveness or safety of A. vera extracts for either cosmetic or medicinal purposes, and what positive evidence is available is frequently contradicted by other studies.
Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that A. vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as mannans, anthraquinones and lectins. Homeopathic is a complementary disease-treatment system in which a patient is given minute doses of natural substances that in larger doses would produce symptoms of the disease itself.

What is Aloe? Aloe is a plant. The Aloe plant prefers dry climates and grows in the more arid regions of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Scientists have discovered more than 240 different species of the Aloe plant. Of those, just 4 are acknowledged as offering significant health benefits to humans. One species, Aloe Barbadensis Miller, holds the most promise of all. This last one is the Aloe species most commonly used in Aloe-based products.
Aloe Vera is a member of the Lily family, but looks somewhat like a cactus. This is because of the spins that protrude perpendicular to its direction of growth. You can see this resemblance in the picture on the left.
Note the sharp cactus-like spines pointing at right angles to the plant’s direction of growth.
Why Aloe Vera? Because the Aloe plant is truly remarkable. The leaf of an Aloe plan contains more than 75 nutrients and 200 active compounds (20 minerals, 18 amino acids and 12 vitamins). Because of this, an Aloe-based beverage made from the plant’s inner gel has more nutritional value than practically any other type of beverage. Learn more by clicking here.
